Как и собственно классическая генетика, геномика занимается изучением структуры, функций и механизмов работы генов. Однако, если генетика интересуется отдельными генами (или наборами таких генов), вовлеченными в регуляцию конкретного биологического процесса, то геномика направлена на анализ структуры генома как целого и занимается изучением всей совокупности происходящих процессов и обеспечивающих их механизмов.
